Our department has a rich history that dates back to 1965 when the college was established. Originally known as the Department of Biology, it began with just two dedicated staff members: Prof. Joseph Thomas in Botany and Prof. Sebastian Thomas in Zoology. As the department grew, Prof. V. S. Joseph joined their ranks. In 1980, Department of Biology was divided in to Botany and Zoology.
Under the leadership of Prof. Joseph Thomas, the Department of Botany started its operations with a small but passionate team. In 1981, Dr. Anniamma Thomas joined our department, followed by Smt. Susamma Joseph and Smt. A. V. Annamma in 1982, and Smt. Jessy Mathew in 1984. Unfortunately, in 1990, we lost Prof. Joseph Thomas, and Prof. V. S. Joseph took over as the Head of the Department. In 2002, after the retirement of Prof. V. S. Joseph, Dr. Anniamma Thomas assumed the role of the department's head. In 2013, we were delighted to welcome Mr. Joby Joseph, an alumnus of our department, as an assistant professor. Most recently, in 2021, Dr. Abin Sebastian joined our department, further enriching our faculty.
Since its inception, the department has maintained well-equipped laboratories, thanks to the consistent support of our dedicated staff. We have been fortunate to have individuals like Sri. A. M. Joseph serving as the Herbarium keeper and Sri K. M. Joseph as the Lab Assistant. Currently, Mr. Noble Mathew serves as our lab attender, ensuring the smooth functioning and maintenance of our labs.
As of now, our department offers a comprehensive BSc course in Botany. We are committed to providing our students with excellent facilities and ample opportunities to successfully complete their BSc in Botany. Through rigorous training in laboratory protocols and high-quality project work, we aim to equip our students with the skills and knowledge necessary for a rewarding career in the field of Botany.
Join us at the Department of Botany and embark on an exciting journey of exploration and discovery in the fascinating world of plants.
